My Grandfather's Grandfather

from Gleewood by Gleewood

lyrics

My grandfather’s grandfather came from the Rio Grande,
Lost all his money from an outlaw band,
The West is unkind to those who do not know,
You can run from the East to the setting sun but the devil is sure to follow

The sky was gold and violet, and the sun was veiled in red
When the bandelero band stopped the iron caravan
and held that pistol up to my head.

The train was filled with weathered faces, of pelts and furs of an Indian kind,
And there was no surprise in their tired eyes
When bandits came in with guns held high.

“Woa that’s a mighty fine coat boy! I think I’ll take it off your hands,
It’s just my size so keep your hands in the sky,
I think you’ll understand-”

“-that I’m gonna take your silver, but your body can keep your soul,
so don’t gimme no cheek or you’ll spring a leak
just where your eye’s supposed to go.”

Headed westward as a free man, I Got a job on the buffalo planes,
but as I counted my blessin’s lookin’ down that Smith & Weston
Somethin’ inside me changed.

Well you can have my silver, but this here coat belongs to me,
See I’m new to this land but you just help me understand
Just how it is I’m gonna earn my keep.

My Grandfather’s grandfather, well he dawned a three-piece suite
And he earned his bounty boardin’ trains in Lincoln County
with the iron that he took –

-From the first outlaw man that took silver from his hand,
Killin’ bandits as a Pinkerton.

There’s a place they call enchanted where the wild game roams, where the legends of El Dorado, and the Conquistadores call home.
The West is unkind to those who do not know you can run from the east to the setting sun but the devil is sure to follow
